Marya Adaline Zines was born in Poland in 1910. She married Joseph (Red) George Pozeynot. Mayra died in Salem, Ohio in 2008. She and Joseph had three children. Please see their entry under Zines Family Generation IV.
John Joseph Zines, Jr.
John Joseph Zines, Jr. was born on April 2, 1914 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He died on May 23, 1980 in Salem, Ohio. John married Anna Margaret Skowron on October 16, 1937 in Salem, Ohio. Please see Anna's entry under Skowron Family Generation III.
John attended school through the eighth grade. He did not attend high school, as he was needed to help support his family. This was common in the United States during this time period. He was a man of many occupational talents: Professional Driver (Chauffer), Heavy Equipment Operator, Press Operator, and Class A Tool and Die Maker. He served in the United States Army for three years during World War II, rising from Private to Staff Sergeant in the 69th Infantry Division. He saw service as a drill instructor, squad leader, and staff driver. His combat service took him through the Battle of the Bulge, the assault on the Rhine, and the final push into Germany where his unit (made up of men of Eastern European ancestry) was the first to link up with the Soviet Army near Torgau. After the cessation of hostilities, John remained in Berlin, Germany through early 1946 as a staff driver for his colonel.
John was also an immensely talented athlete. His specialty was as a fast-pitch softball pitcher. His pitches were crudely clocked at speeds exceeding 100mph. His grandson, Jeffrey, once had a conversation with one of John's old Army buddies. His buddy related a story where they played a pick-up softball game against an African-American logistics unit after the war. This gentleman teamed up with John as his catcher. He said that John pitched so hard that his hand was swollen for a week. While John most certainly could have played professional baseball, the pay was barely enough to live on and the travel would have kept him away from his young family, which would not have been appealing to someone who had just spent three years away with the Army.
Theodore Stanley Zines, Sr.
Theodore "Ted" Zines was born in Crabtree (Greensburg?) Pennsylvania in 1915. He was the fourth child of Jan and Kunegunda. Ted attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Salem. He worked at Eljer Plumbing as an enameler spray-painting bathtubs, sinks, and commodes produced by the company. Ted was unable to serve in the military alongside his brother due to a medical condition that made him ineligible for duty. He supported the war effort by working for the Ravana Arsenal, making munitions.
Ted suffered from health issues for most of his life. He had a severe heart attack in middle-age which prevented him from working. He kept himself occupied by tinkering in his garage, gardening, fishing, and listening to the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) on the radio. Additionally, long before it became "hip," he brewed his own beer. As far as is known, he never named or marketed it. It was purely a hobby for home consumption. Webmaster Jeffrey has a very strong memory of Uncle Ted giving him a bottle of Coke/Pepsi in his basement. This was the first time I remember drinking a soda straight from the bottle! Ted passed away in Salem in 1981
